Story: Life Missing Pieces

January 29, 2021

One evening while out strolling, I observed a store with a sign Open for Business. The name of the store was The Puzzle Store. I loved doing puzzles and went inside. As I walked into the store, it amazed me to see how huge it was inside. A salesperson approached me and started showing me around. When I got to a certain area of the store, I noticed an open room with a dim light and boxes of puzzles. “Are those puzzles you haven’t put on the shelves? No, those puzzles were from our Life area and we had to send these back to the puzzle maker. There were pieces missing,” she explained.

Walking and continuing to view the incredible pictures designed on the boxes was breathtaking. She explains they have puzzles from around the world. Approaching another section, I noticed the sign above the display: Life Missing Pieces. She looked at me with a smile and said these were their biggest sellers. Each comes with one or two missing pieces “Why would you sell a puzzle knowing there’re missing pieces. Why would anybody purchase a puzzle knowing some pieces are missing?” I asked.

“We didn’t know this until customers started bringing them back. We labeled the returned box with the customer’s information and item number. Next, we would send the information to the maker. He would include the missing piece (s) for the patron. Once by mistake we sent a customer’s name, forgetting to send the box and without the item number of the purchaser. It surprised us that the maker knew what piece was missing with only the customer’s name. The room you saw were puzzles waiting for the customers to come back to pick up along with their missing piece (s).”

I further pursued the matter, being quite confused regarding this. “Let me make sure I understand, if I chose a box from this section, a piece or pieces will automatically not be in the box?” “Yes!” My curiosity had the best of me. Looking over the boxes, I singled out one that was off to the side. The salesperson explains they put this box in the group of boxes in the display, but each morning when they arrive it was separate to the side. Picking up that box, I purchased it. With a solemnity in her eyes, I hadn’t noticed before she stated, “Remember to come back for the missing pieces. We will send your name back to,” pausing and this time she expressed with extreme sincerity “the Creator.”
